You cannot judge this book by its cover. Pearl Garden may sound and look like your average Chinese-American takeout joint, but looks are deceiving. The old pictures up on the board showing moo goo gai pan and beef & broccoli are misleading and probably left over from the previous owners. Don't try ordering General Tso's chicken here. The menu is surprisingly short as compared to previously mentioned takeouts. It now features mainly Taiwanese specialties and they're amazingly cooked by a Chinese grandma. As I walked in, she yells from the kitchen what I would like. My Taiwanese is spotty to non-existent, so I just point to the menu items I would like. She loads up a round plastic container with rice, some meat sauce, cabbage, eggplant , a soy sauce egg and a fried chicken leg that looked like it came from an emu. The chicken was a little overcooked and underseasoned but still good. Pictures of the containers are misleading because they are not the normal 6" diameter takeout ones. They are the 8" oversize. In the other container she puts a huge fried fish fillet the size of my shoe. It would be an order of British fish & chips if you replaced the rice with fries. Then she asks if I want soup. How did she know I love soup?? I gleefully said "yes, please!" and she dips a big ladle into a huge pot on the stove to fill 2 pint containers. It turns out to be bitter melon & pork bone soup with lots of ginger that's been simmering all day. It's really tasty and included with each rice dish. Pearl Garden is just off the first exit (14th Ave) from the Whitestone Bridge and super convenient on my way home to pick up a quick dinner. Free parking is available around the corner on the side streets. It says they are closed on Mondays & Tuesdays, but I took a chance today and walked out with a huge amount of amazing food. I'm curious to see what the Taiwanese Bento Boxes will be like, especially the Railroad Bentos. Next time: Eel Rice & Jia Jiang Mein!

It's a small place, but packed with people ordering. I checked on the menu, everything looks so delicious. Had hard to go decide what I want. Then I saw on the menu , there is combo that has Pork chop, Chicken, Eel ( they called it 海陸空, From the sea, land and sky, I don't think Chicken can fly) Anyways, it's a great deal! Only $20 ( it was $18, I added the sausage ). Also, it came with homemade soup, you want sweet soup or normal soup, your choice. Highly recommend this place, fair price and great taste and I AM Soooooo FULL!

Another really good meal. Pass up on the Kung Pao...hard and dry for my taste. Stick with the Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup for sure! How it is, that they make the beef so juicy and tender is beyond me...but a must try here! Will be back to try m

This is a great go to place for authentic Taiwanese flavor palette on Chinese food. It does not have your typical Chinese takeout food but their specialties such as their Taiwanese bento boxes are a must try! This place is my go to place when I don't know what to eat and have some time to wait. I'd give it 5 stars if it wasn't for the long waits I have experienced. The owners are hard workers and constantly doing their best to serve everyone. Because they are always busy, you can expect the phone line to be busy and quite a wait even when you arrive at the store to pick up your food. Another con is that the owners predominantly speak mandarin and not much English. Sometimes, there is a third person who is able to speak English but it is unpredictable of when that person is present. The wait may be long and you might get impatient but the food is worth waiting for. If you don't know what to order, I'd recommend anyone to try any of the Taiwanese bento boxes. All rice boxes come with a complimentary soup! You can choose between savory or sweet. The type of soup varies every time but you can guarantee that it is very homemade and comforting and worth trying! Everything from here is a huge portion and a great value for the price you're paying for. I also suggest to be prepared to pay with cash for their a 3% surcharge for using credit cards.
